I enjoyed a fresh green
salad this morning. So what you may be thinking. The difference is the veggies
were picked last night. A few friends of mine rent one of the many garden plots
provided by the City of Toronto. For a small fee (about $30 or so) per year.
The city makes small (12 by 24 feet) plots; complete with water supply. You
must maintain the plot in order to keep it.
With a population of just over 6 million for the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), many have no space to grow a flower or veggie garden. The city garden plots allow for the green thumbs to express themselves. Summer in Toronto is a great time to enjoy the outdoors. Gardening is a big part of summer here. With the mixing of over 100 cultures here; each one lends their favor and expertise in how they do things. This especially true in terms of gardening.
Back to the salad. My
friends Azim and Sher gave me gifts of butter lettuce, dill, mint, spring onion,
radishes and chives. All were grown without pesticides. It is work to process
fresh stuff from the garden. The extra washing and chopping is well worth it.
Health benefits and nutrition aside, IT TASTES GREAT!!
I took these ingredients and did a quick honey-mustard dressing (secret ingredients are honey and mustard). All I have to say is Bring on the Fresh. I a future post, I talk more about the garden plots around the city.
